In 2016 Foyle Port attained membership to the EcoPorts network after an evaluation and appraisal of our current Environmental Management Programme. EcoPorts is a European wide network of professionals and port organisations committed to environmental management throughout the marine sector. EcoPorts was established in 1994 as part of an initiative by the European Sea Port Organisation (ESPO) to encourage best practice amongst its member ports and to set targets towards continuous improvement through voluntary self-regulation regarding port development and environmental protection.
The review concluded that Foyle Port is an
...exemplar port in several key areas because it demonstrates good practice and a policy of 'compliance-plus' in terms of its environmental protection and objectives of sustainable development. The Port's Environmental Management Programme with its standards, organization and activity profile not only serves the Port Authority itself but also illustrates a model worth copying throughout the sector.
