Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners is a vibrant and rapidly developing port, with a capacity of over 2 million tonnes of cargo. It is a deep water port which is capable of dealing with a full range of customers’ requirements, including our specialist capability in handling bulk cargo and cruise shipping needs.
Our goal is to be the port of first choice for our existing and future customers. We also work hard to address the needs of others who have a stake in our business, such as employees, local authorities, the community and the Government.
Having doubled turnover in the last 4 years, the port has almost completed its first strategic plan which has provided a strong platform for future development. Last year a new £16m oil terminal opened at our Lisahally site, the first oil terminal to be built in Ireland for 50 years. We have completed the purchase of our future landbank, providing 30 acres of extra space adjacent to our Lisahally site. This clearly demonstrates our commitment to long-term sustainable development and the ability of both board and management to delivering this growth.
The Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners was first established in 1854. Today it is managed by a board of Commissioners, who are publicly appointed for four year terms. Click here for details. (In total there are nine Commissioners including the Chief Executive. The power of the Commissioners is limited to those conferred on them by the Londonderry Port and Harbour Act (Northern Ireland) 1970 and successive Harbour Provision Orders, most recently that of 2002).
